The first time I saw casino war in actual play was watching Chevy Chase in Vegas Vacation. With his Cousin Eddie, Clark Griswold visits some of the local gambling casinos, which are obviously low rent dives, and Clark plays games like Pick a Number, Rock Scissors Paper, and of course, War. I wonder if the writers of that movie knew that Casino War would actually become a real casino game played by thousands of people.

Casino War seems like it would be an even money bet and the house wouldn’t have an advantage. Because it pays even money, and you have a 50/50 chance of beating the dealer each time. Or at least that’s how it seems at first glance. With a little thought, you’ll figure out there’s a third option besides player beats dealer and dealer beats player. There’s the tie, where you “go to war” with your opponent.

Going to war happens when your card and the dealer’s card are of the same rank. When you go to war, you must place an additional bet in the same amount of your original bet in order to go to war, and the dealer burns 3 cards for each of you before laying down another card. If you win, you only get paid on the original bet. This extra bet when you go to war with the dealer is what gives the house its edge in casino war. This gives the house an edge of 2.88%.

You also have the option of surrendering instead of going to war, but this increases the house edge to 3.7%. And you’re also able to make a side wager on the chances of tieing the dealer, but this is literally one of the worst bets in the casino, giving the house an edge of over 18%. Smart players don’t give the house an edge that high. You’ll lose too much money too fast that way.

Most online casinos offer casino war. I’d imagine that it’s a dead easy game to program since the concept and the rules are so simple. But the game plays very fast, and the house edge adds up over the number of bets that you make. Fast games with a large house edge generally mean you’re going to lose money pretty fast unless you get really lucky.

That being said, I’ve always enjoyed casino war, and my tactic is normally to take some of my video poker winnings and make a big casino war bet with them. That or a bet on red or black at the roulette table, in a quick attempt to double up at the end of a playing session where I got lucky.
