Sports Betting Tips

Sports betting is arguably the most popular type of gambling in America. One of the great hypocrisies in the USA is that everyone in the sports industry acts like they’d never even consider placing a wager on a sporting event, but all the newspapers publish all the lines every single day. If no one’s betting on these events, why are people so interested in the odds?

Here are some beginner tips related to sports betting:

  • Know what the basic sporting bets involve: point spreads, totals, and money lines are all things you should be familiar with.
  • On a standard point-spread bet, the house has a 4.5% edge, theoretically.
  • The hourly cost of gambling on sports is lower than any other type of gambling, because a single $20 wager can last the entire 3 hours of a televised football game.
  • Someone who can bet on sports intelligently can actually get an edge, but you have to be a whole lot smarter than I am. But you can make more money betting on sports than you can playing poker, and that’s the best gambling action I know of.
  • 900 numbers with sports betting tips are usually bogus. They probably have their five year old giving them tips.
  • Handicapping sports well enough to get an edge requires a Herculean effort. You have to digest enormous amounts of information and make accurate analyses of that data.

I don’t promote any offshore sports betting sites on this website, because the federal government takes a dim view of it. I do support legalizing sports betting and other forms of gambling though. One consequence of making an activity illegal is the lack of protection the government can provide for the literally millions of people engaged in the activity, and that’s exactly what’s going on in the sports betting industry. Hope you enjoyed my beginner sports betting tips article.
